Audio Visual Document Database
By popular demand, we are pleased to introduce the addition of our Audio Visual Document
Database to our Web site.
A management tool
- This Database has been designed to help the Records Management and Archives (RM&A) staff
to inventory our massive audio visual collection, especially for long-term preservation
and henceforth the reformatting program which was put in place in the 1990s. Because of
that, many descriptions are not detailed, some documents are not properly identified and
adjustments will have to be made in the future. If you wish to play a document and that
it can indeed be reformatted, you will be asked to absorb the costs associated with the
process. Each reformatting operation is different and the costs vary considerably from
one medium to another and depend also on the length of the document.
- The reformatting costs are very high and for that reason, some documents have not been
reformatted.
- Unfortunately, for some documents, time has had its toll and we are unable to play them
anymore. The technology is obsolescent and even with the best of programs in place, it
is very difficult to keep up to date and to save all documents. Sometimes, even the equipment
that was used for reformatting has disappeared.
Consulting documents in the Archives
- Documents already reformatted can be played, but only on site. If you wish to do so,
please make an appointment with the RM&A technician, Caroline Sigouin. Indicate which
documents you would like to play, so she can make sure they are safely accessible.
Without an appointment, the RM&A cannot guarantee that the document or the equipment
will be available.
- Most of the documents are still under the protection of copyright and may not be
reproduced without the authorization of the stake holder.
We hope this new tool, even with its limits, will help you in your research.
